In this blog, I will give you an overview of all nine energy centers, where we’ll discuss their significance, specific functions, and your ideal strategy to use them to your advantage when defined or undefined.

But before we dive in, let’s have a quick understanding of our energy system.  

A Basic Understanding of Human Energy Centers 

It’s a basic quantum physics that everything in the world represents a token of energy with a signature vibration of its own.

And we are no exception. We’ve nine brilliant jewels within us, known as energy centers (Chakras), and represented by the square, triangle, or diamond shapes in a Human Design Chart.

They interfere between the Universe’s energy and the energy within all of us, defining our individual functions and expressions. 

These Chakras operate as opening and closing valves for energy flow inside our body. They are connected through 36 narrow channels through which energy flow takes place. Each end of those channels is numbered, known as 64 gates. 

Each center has its own way of receiving, assimilating, modifying, and expressing energy. Not all centers are open (defined) inside your body.

You may have one or more undefined (closed) energy centers. A center is defined in color in the chart based on whether a connecting channel is active or non-active. 

The combined effect of all nine energy centers as per their state (defined center / undefined center) governs your function, awareness, instinct, or behavior. 

Don’t confuse it with body energy; we are talking about the life energy present inside the body since birth.

It circulates inside your body every second, connecting you to everyone around you.

It may appear that our mouths and eyes are doing all the communications, but it’s the powerful undercurrent of nine Chakras that are pulling the strings on a deep bio-energetic level.

The Nine Energy Centers in Human Design System

1. Head Center (Crown Chakra)

Located at the apex of your head, the Crown chakra denotes the center of inspiration. It serves as a conduit for receiving cosmic inspiration from the universe and downloading it into your unconscious mind.

That’s why it’s represented as a triangle, resembling an antenna. The Crown is unique as it is solely connected to the Mind center, representing your quest for life’s true purpose.

That pressure you feel while desperately seeking answers is your Crown chakra in action.

Anatomically, it is regarded as the pineal gland, a small gland the size of a pea nestled within the brain’s core.

It indicates whether we’re in a state of profound inspiration or lacking that vital spark in our life. 

If Your Crown Center is Defined 

When your Crown chakra is defined, you’ll be bombarded with ideas, truths, doubts, and possibilities.

It’s like a flow of inspiration passing through your brain from an unknown source. Your mind will always be after exciting insights and fresh realizations.

With such an active mind, it will be natural for you to inspire others. Though it can be mentally exhausting, you will feel highly rewarded when inspiration leads to satisfaction. 

If your Crown Center is Undefined 

With an undefined head chakra, you’re open to the conditioning of other designs. You yearned to be inspired by people.

But, it leaves your head spinning with a kaleidoscope of thoughts. The risk is that you may act on people’s thoughts and live your whole life in their shadows.

It would be in your best interest to save your Crown from external conditioning by addressing various streams of influence with clarity. 

2. Mind Center (Ajna Chakra)

The Ajna chakra distills and processes information from the Crown chakra to reach an understanding.

It constantly works as our mental wheel, never ceasing from festering worries and agitation in our deep thinking.

Anatomically, it relates to the pituitary gland, which is present in the frontal brain.

In Eastern culture, it is also known as “the Third Eye” or “the mystical eye of knowledge.”  

If your Ajna Center is defined

With a defined Ajna center, your mind loves to compare, review, and research facts for one reason or another and dumps them over your Crown chakra.

Once you put your mind to something, you don’t rest until it’s done before taking the next issue.

But, sometimes, you fancy your mind with problems that don’t exist. Your racing thoughts constantly put you in a state of worry until you learn how to control them through different means.   

If your Ajna Center is not defined 

An undefined Ajna chakra makes you open-minded and absent-minded at the same time.

You’re prone to forget things and get distracted by random thoughts.

For example, if you accidentally leave your house open before heading out or forget to turn the iron off, you have an undefined Ajna chakra.

But don’t worry, even the great scientist Albert Einstein had this center undefined. Yet, it allowed him to have detached objectivity to find clarity in the hassle of life.  

3. Throat Center (Vishuddha Chakra)

Your throat chakra creates and makes things happen for you. Through this voice box, all your deeds and dreams seek reality through unique ways of expression such as voice, actions, and writing.

It also represents your power of manifestation. All energy centers seek release through this center.

For instance, you can speak your mind (via Ajna chakra) and express what your heart feels (heart chakra) via your Throat center.

Anatomically, it relates to the thyroid gland and parathyroid gland. 

If your Thorat Center is Defined 

With a defined Throat center, you can communicate with a voice that sparks cadence and confidence.

This helps you better express yourself, leading to the successful manifestation of your dreams. You become a powerful speaker and catalyze speech in other people. 

If your Thorat Center is undefined

You lack the right words to express yourself when your Throat is undefined. But it can also turn you into a real chatterbox.

You try to dominate conversations with all that stored pressure behind your communicative walls.

In an ideal conducive environment, you hardly pause to draw breath or ever ask about other person’s life and well-being.

If you have an undefined throat center, the ideal strategy is to open up only when the time is right. 

4. G Center (Third Eye Chakra)

This diamond-shaped chakra, just beneath the sternum, is called the G center (Identity center).

It represents purpose, direction in life, and self-love. This is where you find a consistent connection to your soul.

Your love for spirituality, physical forms, humanity, or journey of life all reside here.

Anatomically, it is compared to the liver, which cleanses the blood, like this chakra filters life experiences. 

If your G center is defined 

A defined G center gives you an assured self-identity. You know who you are and where you’re heading in life.

With this certainty about your character, you seek to be your best version by tapping into the in-built compass that guides your ‘home.’

If your G center is undefined 

With an undefined Self chakra, you struggle to find a strong sense of identity.

But, you can derive a sense of self from people around you and reflect back to them the truth of who they are.

You tend to lack purpose in life with no built-in compass for guidance.

On the plus side, this flexibility allows you to flow and live in the environment by turning yourself into a social chameleon.

You can beat this by seeking guidance from someone whose Self chakra is defined- that’s your strategy. 

5. Heart Center (Anahata Chakra)

Next to the Self, towards the right, is the Heart chakra. It fuses you with willpower and ego to be a ‘top dog’ in the material world.

With the power of Heart chakra, you conjure the willpower toward freedom.

Whether your willpower is invested in pursuits of the greater good or to meet selfish reasons is greatly balanced by your Heart chakra (also known as ego center). 

If your Heart Center is defined 

It’s rare to have a defined heart. If you’re, you are one of those iron-willed persons who can move mountains.

If you throw your heart into something, you draw the courage to see it accomplished without any questions asked.

But, you must be careful about aligning with what truly deserves your time and energy. 

If your Heart Center is undefined

An undefined heart doesn’t mean that you don’t have willpower. It simply means you can’t rely on your willpower to fiercely compete in matters of ego.

If you compare yourself with others and over-compete, you may run out of fuel (willpower) to win the battle.  

6. Sacral Center (Svadhisthana Chakra)

It’s another motor center, like the Heart center, powered by life force energy.

Your Sacral Chakra is the energy powerhouse (gut response) for unleashing you out of your shell toward the sky.

This chakra is also referred to as the ‘sex center’ as the majority of its gates have a sexual undertone.

If you know how to use your sacral energy correctly, you tap into an unstoppable energy that brings about personal fulfillment. 

If your Sacral Center is defined 

With a defined sacral center, you respond to whatever life throws at you.

You sustain any endeavor with massive commitment until the experience is complete.

Your gut response becomes the moral compass that pulls you to or from someone or something.

Often, people with defined sacral chakra spend their lives as unappreciated workhorses fulfilling others’ projects. But they take it as a calling.

Even you may find them feel obliged to take on the tasks of others as their own. Such people also have the potential for a sustained and satisfying sex life.  

If your Sacral Center is undefined 

You will soon realize that your best inputs tend to come in spurts or when you’re in a team.

If you try to keep up the powerhouse to pursue your goals, you’ll born out. Your human design wouldn’t cope.

It would be in your best interest to let a team manage and see how the collective energy gets best utilized.

You need to learn how to outsource and delegate instead of handling it all by yourself. 

7. Emotional Center (Solar Plexus)

The Emotional chakra is present just to the right of your Sacral and is considered one of the most intense of all nine centers.

It is responsible for all your mood swings between happiness and sadness.

As one of the three ‘awareness centers’ and one of the four ‘motor centers,’ it creates a balance between awareness and your drive to act and accomplish. 

If your Emotional Center is defined

You are highly emotional yet have little to no understanding of the true scope of your emotions. It’s natural for you to experience a full spectrum of feelings- rising, falling, peaking, and dipping.

You fly high to sample the cloud nines one minute and down your nose in the mud the next.

Decisions made at the moment of emotional peaks are your enemy.

Instead, when you feel so, disengage from them and let them pass through until you feel natural again.

That’s because your emotions can be contagious and mirrored by people around you. 

If your Emotional Center is undefined

If you have an undefined solar plexus center, you quickly get caught in other people’s emotional waves.

You laugh their laughs and cry their tears. That’s the reason you must always remain watchful of emotions you’re getting subjected to, whether toxic or healthy. Otherwise, you are calm, cool, and collected as a lone wolf. 

8. Awareness Center (Spleen Chakra)

Spleen is another major awareness center that provides the ability to survive and a feel-good factor about life.

It’s your inner radar to help you scan the moments and to help you respond spontaneously to situations as per your instinct, intuition, and taste.

Also, the spleen center blinks red lights on sensing hazardous people or situations.

Anatomically, it represents our immune system as in the body’s emotional defense system. 

If your Spleen is defined

You are highly intuitive and respond to life on the spur of the moment.

A spontaneous sensibility always keeps scanning your surroundings for any sense of threat or discord.

The moment your senses warn you to disengage that doesn’t fit your nature, you turn on your heel and get out of the place, be it someone’s home, a party, a restaurant, or a shopping mall. 

If your Spleen is not defined

You easily get triggered by others and mirror their fears.

With an undefined splenic center, you focus on that fear without any root cause, which can be debilitating.

Once you start to see your borrowed fears objectively and consciously, it can be turned into wisdom. 

9. Root Center (Muladhara Chakra)

That square center sitting at the bottom of your life chart is your adrenaline and drive to act, known as the Root center.

You feel joy, rooted, and grounded in life because of this energy center.

As a center of raw energy, it provides the push to get things done in response to the pressure by the Crown chakra to rationalize life.

Anatomically, it represents the adrenal gland, which drives madness and stress in our lives. 

If your Root Center is defined

You compose an intense drive within and draw people into your aura to perform actions without losing balance. This volcano of energy, however, should be controlled with calmness. Otherwise, you may become an adrenal junkie with stress that even the Root can’t handle. That said, you must always aim to strike a balance between your goals and worthwhile ambitions. 

If your Root Center is not defined

You’re designed to live your life at your own pace. When you get conditionally influenced by people with a defined root, you feel stressed.

As you don’t have consistent access to the adrenaline to carry you through, you need time for the pressure to build within.

It may make you appear as a serial procrastinator.

Stay centered and true to yourself when you commit to people’s needs and pressure. Be watchful, find tranquility, and practice meditation.

How to Read Your Human Design Chart?

Let me help you learn how to read your Human Design Chart by understanding the following concepts. 

Channels and Gates

Gates represent a connected network of channels, with each holding a unique energy or behavioral trait.

All red ones are unconscious gates, and they also represent the design. The black ones represent your conscious or min/personality.

A gate that represents both your personality and design is colored in red and black lines.

Then there are defined gates that combine the characteristics of two gates, giving birth to the third energy.

It is also defined as the center of both ends. If you don’t have any defined channel connecting to another channel, you have an undefined center. 

Design and Personality

If you look carefully at the chart, you will see a column of numbers displayed on each side of the bodygraph named design and Personality.

They represent the position of the planets, sun, moon, earth, and south & north nodes of the moon. 

The left column (design) represents our unconscious definition, while the right column (personality) defines our conscious self.

While in astrology, we consider only the natal chart, Human design considers two elements:

• Your birth date and time for conscious definition
• 88 days before your birth for unconscious definition

Your personality is what you are consciously aware of. It is what you think you are. Meanwhile, your design is your unconscious definition.

It is something you start to learn about yourself when people point it out to you. Some of your unconscious definitions are passed down to you genetically.

Although you have no control over what you receive from your ancestors, you can certainly work to redesign it.

Energy centers

The human design system identifies nine centers in the bodygraph spreading through our body.

Each of these centers is governed by some specific energies. Together, they influence various functions of our body.

The colored portion of the energy center in the chart describes Who We Are. 

Meanwhile, if the center is undefined, there is no consistency in possessing its energies.

The open centers are where we receive our deepest conditioning. It could be a source of our resistance or suffering.

However, once you start to respect your design mechanism, the open centers become a source of wisdom and knowledge.

Each of these centers is governed by some specific energies which affect the functions of our body.

A simplified overview of Open Centers

Head Center

Head center rules attributes like inspiration, mental pressure, and critical thinking. An undefined head center can make you think of unnecessary things and end up with a head full of questions. 

Ajna Center

Your Anja center defines how you analyze a situation and process information. An undefined Ajna center could signify that you have little control over your thought processing and analysis.

Throat Center

With this defined center, you thrive in communication and manifestation. If it’s undefined, that means you have no consistency in taking action to achieve your goals but have flexible communication skills.

G CENTER

The G center is located in the middle of your body. It defines your unique identity and persuades you to take a certain direction in life. An undefined G Center is often associated with a weak identity.

Heart center

The heart center, aka the ego center, controls your self-esteem, willpower, and ego. It helps you survive in a materialistic world. An undefined heart center indicates you have low self-esteem and you often undermine yourself.

Sacral Center

A defined sacral center powers your sexuality, vitality, and will to persist. If your sacral center is undefined, it could indicate an inconsistency in vitality.

That means you don’t know when you will stop and relax. You continue to overdo things, including working, eating, and other aspects of your life. 

Root Center

The root center controls your drive and physical pressure. If your root center is undefined, you often do things as fast as you can when under pressure.

Spleen Center

Spleen revolves around your center of instinct, intuition, and survival. An undefined sleep center shows you are easily vulnerable to trauma and fear.

Solar Plexus Center

The solar plexus center rules your emotions and mental state. If it’s undefined, it means you are likely to feel intense emotions, even in small matters. 

Mandala

Mandala is a visual representation of the human design system that helps you read and interpret the chart more easily.

Components of a Mandala

The inner wheel: It is represented by 12 zodiac signs. Unlike traditional astrology, the interpretation of these signs is different. 

The outer wheel: It includes 64 hexagrams of I’Ching, with each hexagram indicating some form of energy. These energies are related to your genetic code and 64 codons of your DNA.

Bodygraph: It is located in the middle of the Mandala. Every person has a uniquely activated hexagram determined by the position of the planet during the time of their birth. It is comprised of 9 centers, 36 channels, and 64 gates.

Your chart will describe your Type at the top. There are five human design systems, and knowing your Type is like decoding your personal programming to thrive in this world.

Generators

Generators are born to build. They love to solve problems or take on a challenge. There is a consistent flow of energy in their sacral chakra. It makes them prone to overwork and risk burnout. Therefore, minding good health is necessary for Generators. 

Generators must save their sacral energy from wasting on commitments beyond their capability. Your ideal strategy is to wait before saying Yes to anything. 

Strategy: To wait to respond

Manifestors

Manifestors are lone wolves, always on a mission to make a big impact and fix things but without all that interference. You love to plan things on your own without seeking advice from others. 

Your secret weapon is the “informing before acting” strategy. That’s how you roll, managing people like a boss. By sharing your plans upfront, you avoid those pesky last-minute hurdles and keep the flow going.

Strategy: To Inform others before taking actions

Manifesting Generators

Manifesting Generators have the characteristics of a Generator and a Manifester. You’re all about what brings you joy and satisfaction.

With your sacral life force, you have got that hardworking Generator spirit, but your Manifestor can speak things into reality. 

You have got this amazing knack for knowing what’s working in your favor. So you don’t end up with too much on your plate. 

Strategy: To Respond, Then Inform

Projectors

If finding your inner desire and skills is a struggle, you might be a Projector. But that doesn’t make you any less than Generators and Manifestors.

In fact, Projectors are highly sought-after skilled individuals and leaders, challenged a bit by their lack of consistency.

As a Projector, waiting for recognition is your key to success. Once you allow the pieces to fall, you will shine as a natural guide, manager, and director. 

Strategy: To wait for the invitation

Reflectors 

Reflectors are rare gems in the human design system. They are oversensitive and feel vulnerable to negative energies. A reflector’s aura picks up energies around it and reflects into the world, hence the name. 

As a Reflector, you’re like an energy sponge, soaking up everything and aligning with it. You may quickly get influenced by others and make hefty decisions only to repent later. That’s why the moon cycle is your best friend. For you, living in alignment is to wait for a full moon cycle before acting on any decision.

Strategy: To wait for a full Lunar Cycle before taking any decision 

Authority 

The human design system has eight inner authority that dictates a person’s decision-making skills.

Solar plexus- emotional

People with emotional authority are masters of their emotions. You are pretty adaptable to your feelings. You can easily accept your feelings and release them at ease, which most people struggle with.

Sacral

You are likely to have a sacral inner authority if you are among the generators or manifesting generators. With abundant energies in your sacral, you can easily realize what works for you. This gives you an upper hand in your career, relationship, and other aspects of life. 

Splenic

Have you ever had a feeling that something is not right? You may have a splenic inner authority. It is an instinctual authority that keeps you away from emotional harm. You live in the present and are well aware of everything happening.

Ego-Manifested

Ego-manifested individuals make decisions from their hearts, taking their sweet time before speaking up.

However, this inner authority holds them back from expressing emotions and reaching goals.

If your chart shows this Authority, it’s time to let go of your limiting beliefs and extreme self-awareness for a while and speak up without hesitation. 

Ego-projected

This type of authority brings in a strong sense of ego. This trait can mostly be seen in projectors who thrive on the opportunity of the right invitation. If you have an Ego-projected authority, try to pause before you initiate a task; it may uncover a new form of happiness.

Self-Projected

You are the master of your own guidance. You discover your inner authority as you speak and learn from it. So, go ahead and speak your mind and let it guide you in the right decision in life.

None (projectors)

If you are a Projector with no inner authority, that means you lack a flow of communication. This can severely impact your decision-making skills. 

Don’t be sad! 

All you have to do is to embrace communication as your guiding force. Open up to your close ones to channel your inner authority, and your decision-making skills will flow naturally.

None (reflectors)

As I mentioned earlier, the lunar cycle is your guide. Surround yourself with positive influences and try to find stability through the moon.

All it takes is to learn and track the moon’s cycles to make decisions in sync with its position.

Profile (Roles and Incarnations)

The profile is the last key yet most powerful one in the human design cycle. Even if you have the same design as others, the profile number can change the whole game, leading to a whole new interpretation of your design and personality.

Your profile line numbers are written as 1/3, 2/5, 2/3, and so on. The first number represents your conscious personality, and the second number influences your unconscious design.

Line 1: Investigator

It indicates that you are very creative and grounded. You never make a decision only after you gather enough evidence about it.

Line 2: Hermit 

If you are a hermit, it means you thrive in solitude.

Line 3: Martyr 

Martyrs believe in the theory of eternal knowledge. You learn and evolve every day.

LINE 4: Opportunist

Line 4 revolves around networking and relationship building. You are reliable and hold an influential position in your community or career.

Line 5: Heretic 

You have excellent leadership qualities if you are a heretic. You have a strong potential to learn new information and have the personality to speak your mind.

Line 6: Role Model 

The sixth line comes with three distinct phases. You will likely enter a new phase every 30 years, bringing new experiences and opportunities.

Numbers on each side of the BodyGraph represent certain elements and characteristics of a person.

The numbers on the left are from your unconscious gates, representing your body or Design. The numbers to the right of the BodyGraph are your conscious gates. They represent your personality or mind. 

What is the rarest Human Design profile?

Reflectors are the rarest in the Human Design System, making up only 1% of the human population.

They are born with an open inactive energy or awareness center. Since they don’t have their unique pattern, they constantly take on the energies and emotions of other people.

But what makes them unique is their electromagnetic aura. The reflector’s aura is ‘resistant,’ which works as a protective mechanism.

That means they sample the aura of people around them by taking a small piece of it and reflecting it all back. 

What is line 6 in Human Design?

Line 6 is called the “Role Model” in Human Design. Role Model sees the bigger picture by learning from their experience. They live their life in three distinct stages. 

The first stage ranges from their birth to around their thirties. In this stage, they try everything and learn what works and doesn’t. 

In the second stage, they slow down a bit to reflect upon all their life experiences. They make big decisions in this stage, such as their job, move, marriage, and business. 

The third stage starts in their fifties. In this stage, they again begin to live their life more, but with a more experienced person. 

What is Gift 2 in Human Design?

Gift 2 or Gate 2 is “the Direction of Self,” located in the G or Identity Center.

A person with activated Gate 2 has a natural ability to follow their intuition and path. They have a strong sense of self-direction and individuality.

Pure Generators have a defined Sacral center with no connection between any motor and the throat.

Human Design “Authority Types”

The term “Authority” in the chart defines your intelligence in regard to your decision-making process. 

We all have been taught to think and make decisions from our minds. However, we should believe our gut (intuition) to make decisions free from anxiety, stress, disconnect, and worry.

The Human Design system teaches you to listen to your inner authority, your intuition per se.

We just now understood that except for Reflectors, the rest design types have authority in their charts. Reflectors lack authority because of their undefined spleen. 

1. Sacral Authority 

If your sacral center is defined and is under no additional energy influence, you’ve Sacral authority.

Many Manifestors and Generators fall into this authority type. Such people thrive when they trust their gut feeling over their logic and wait for the opportunity to respond to them instead of working the opposite way. 

2. Splenic 

The spleen is the basic energy center for survival, time, health, and intuition. If your chart shows splenic authority, you must act on your gut.

This nature comes easy for Manifestors and Projectors.

For Generators, it could be confusing as they wonder if it’s the spleen overriding sacral response. For them, the spleen and the sacral work together. 

3. Emotional 

If you have a defined Emotional Solar Plexus, most of your decisions are emotion-driven.

5. Self-projected (G Center)

Self-projected people are more external in the decision-making process, for which they need wisdom for decision-making from outside.

This tendency comes from a channel connecting Identity and Throat centers with no overriding energies, such as Solar Plexus or Spleen.

Therefore, they thrive when their decisions are reflected or projected from a circle of reliable people around them. 

6. Environment/Mental-projected 

These people have a defined connection between the Throat and Ajna Chakras with no overriding energies.

When it comes to making decisions, they are just like self-projected authority people.
